Shift Coupler, Clutch or Transmission?

The good Lord certainly has his way of keeping my plate full. Following some hectic spring and summer business trips, while enjoying a full week of home cooking and some relaxation for a long while, also finally having some time to take care of the car, there is indeed problems for me to take care of.
Going home today from work, the car is stranded about 10 miles from home. The symptom is all of a sudden, it is getting difficult to shift in and out of gear, until can't do it any more. While waiting for the tow truck to come, I try to run down the possible culprit,
1. shift coupling,
2. clutch hydraulics,
3. clutch mechanism,
4. transmission.
At close to 145k miles, if it turns out to be the transmission, I am giving up the SAAB. I will actively pursue getting a used 5 series, I told myself.
The tow truck dropped the car on the driveway. I opened up the plastic cover of the transmission housing. Told my son to depress the clutch while I watch if the clutch is being depressed. It was. So clutch hydraulic is good. Very possibly the clutch is good also. Crawl under the car to look at the shift coupling. Couldn't tell exactly. But the gear select input shaft gives a little while Tim was sitting in the driver's seat shifting in all gears. So it is still inconclusive.
Tomorrow I think I'll first pursue the $7.95 solution of getting a new shift coupler from Jim Moncrief at Sobstory. Replace it and see what happens. At least I will see if the old shift coupler is good or bad when I remove it.
Could it be the unthinkable?
