My 88 and the 86 parts car had a simple 2 pin connector in the aquarium. You should be able to follow the two wires from the sensor near the shift coupler up to the firewall. My 88 had a replacement trans when I got it, and had a connector spliced in the wire in the engine compartment.
This assumes that you have an electrical sensor, not a mechanical one. How was your old one destroyed? I had a problem with the little connector shaft that fits in the transmission gear and goes into the sensor. It can fall out when the sensor is removed, so use care.
I only have an old sensor with cut wires and no shaft.
