Bob:
When my son decided to change-out the stock head unit in his '91 9000, he only had to pull-out the stock cage, unplug the various connectors and plug-in the conversion harness that he bought with the new head unit.
When I changed-out the radio on my '86 900S, I did what he did plus remove the amplifier that was mounted behind the storage tray, which was located directly under the radio. There was an interconnecting cable that plugged into the DIN connector on the radio and the amplifier that made the system work. The connections to the car were the same as on the 9000.
These consist of two connectors - plus the antenna lead. The first connector has the eight speaker wires. The second connector contains the power, antenna signal, dashboard lighting, etc. You can't mix up the connectors because one is male and the other is female. The electronics store that you are dealing with should be able to get you a conversion harness that will plug into the rear of your new radio and then into the two connectors under the dash. Then just plug in the antenna and you're done.
Hope this helps,
PAul R.
