Although Saab heads are not really PRONE to warping, I really wouldn't be surprised if a head with 300,000 miles on it, that's also gone through two head gaskets, was in need of a good resurfacing in order to seat properly.
OK, so the part about the heads being fragile was silly - I take it back.
On the other hand, Tom had to put in a plug insert into his head. And aluminum is certainly not forgiving of errors - it's so easy to strip threads and/or snap off bolts in the head, it certainly makes it SEEM fragile (compared to the cast iron block anyway).
SIGH...good luck Tom, whatever you decide to do.
