I would go absolutely ape over this. As to the bottom end, no it is not making any noise, I was simply thinking it would be nice to have it fresh if I go to the trouble of replacing the head. The buildup is dry and hard so I may have some fuel issue I'm unaware of. I have been looking at engines though and have seen prices from $450 to $1500.
I did not have the head resurfaced when replacing the gasket this time around because it had been resurfaced not that long ago. I must admit since I have been playing catch up with the maintenance on this car, it was neglected until I bought it, it would be somewhat comforting if I found an engine that was good and I could simply drop in.
I was also wondering that if I replace the engine why not put a 2.3 in and keep the fuel & ignition systems I have? Would this work? I know I would have to port my intake to match the head, but it would save getting another ECU & DI/APC module. I would expect the current setup would work with the 2.3 I just don't know what kind of power I could expect or driveability. Any thoughts?
