This doesn't quite fit the bad wheel bearing symptoms that I've observed, even though wheel bearings fail much more often than CV joints.
If the previous owner changed the CV boot himself then that, combined with the missing bolt on the ABS sensor, would make me think 'butcher job'.
Changing the CV boot and/or the CV joint itself is about a 2 on the difficulty scale and a 9 on the messy scale. Still, like any other easy job it can be botched.
Quasi's site http://www.quasimotors.com has a pretty good write on CV joints. I, however, always take the the whole assembly off of the car, clean it up squeaky clean and then install all new grease.
Eeuroparts http://www.eeuroparts.com has a pretty good parts drawing and pretty good prices so you can decide if you want to fix the CV joint or just buy a whole new axle.
Maybe it will turn out to be just a bad wheel bearing/
Good Luck
