Dude- you're lucky you didn't get your ass beat by the cop after he stopped you. I'm all for 10/10th's driving on the track, but on the street you need to chill, or you're going to kill someone. Like Helmet said, the big killer is speed differential- if you're closing on a truck in the construction zone with 40mph on him & he pulls out into your lane, you're dead, Saab brakes or not. Ever seen a car impaled on the back of a truck?
Do your license a favor if you don't lose it- join SCCA or NASA, flog the hell out of your car on the track and drive like an adult on the street! I also think traffic "safety" in the US is a joke, but recognize that with no real driver training here, we (unfortunately) need to drive like the lowest common denominator. I agree that most Americans should never have been given a license, but changing that is pretty involved, to say the least :-). Ever notice how races are won/lost by a few seconds? Over a 15 mile commute, the time you save by going 20mph faster is miniscule.
