1. CV boot fails
2. Grease spins out
3. Dirt gets in
4. Dirt foils joint
5. Joint is shot and starts clicking on slow turns
6. CV joint needs to be replaced (most shops will just replace axle at that point because it is easier and cheaper).
If you are any place before step 5, you should have the joint cleaned and boot replaced. You can go several 1000 miles with clicking joints, but you've gone past the point of preventive maintenance.
