I catch myself daydreaming sometimes what *other* brand and model I would buy that would best replace my '93 CSET in all areas from good performance, economy, functionality to personality. My best answers are:

Subaru OutBack wagon (late '90s)
VOlvo 940T wagon and (late '80s)
Mazda 626 Turbo Wagon (late '80s/early '90s)
M-B 300 TE Wagon 4WD ('90-'95)
