I've had the same frustration only to find the the thing suddenly come free. Didn't understand what might be going on until I read a post by Anders (aka SWEDECAR) saying that the back of the snap ring can stay engaged when the ears are spread. He also mentioned that later years are tighter and may have loctite on the splines.
