I know, I know, some of you consider this cheating or tempting the gods of crummy parts. However, especially in light of the comments a couple of you have made about the tripod bearings falling apart, and certainly the time and pain involved in fussing with the circlip, I still say replacing the axle with a rebuilt one is a smart solution.
A tripod bearing should not normally tend to fall apart unless it's either worn (and in need of replacement) or you really give it a good smack. Healthy tripod bearings shouldn't fall apart even with a fair amount of carelessness.
Given the price of a rebuilt axle -- say $75 after core exchange -- you can't beat the deal -- new tripod bearings, solid CV joints, new boots and grease, and a heck of an easier R&R procedure. I have been schooled in the caveat to check the tightness of the small diameter boot clamps at the axle, as recently I've seen the clamps work loose and lose some grease a few miles down the road. However, I have no other complaints in six or eight axle replacements now. Get something from a reputable foreign car parts specialist, not the chains!!!
Let the debate rage on.....
