I'm not trying to scare anyone, but it does happen and I am trying to save the guy some potential trouble. I agree that taking the axle out is the easiest way, but it would suck to have to get a new tripod joint. You just have to know to not bang it around a lot. Tom Townsend recommends using rubber bands on it while you have it out.
I'm not saying they just fly apart, but if you don't know and you bump them, they do come apart. I'm pretty careful with new ones, and I've never had one fall apart. I'm less careful with old ones that I'm replacing and they often fall apart because I'm less careful. As I said in my message, the thing that can happen is for the little collar to come off and dump needle bearings everywhere. That has nothing to do with the tripod coming off. As you say, that will not happen.
