Bosch Voltage Regulators and Welding Exhaust Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Tue, 14 Dec 2004 09:07:36 In Reply to: Re: Also, alternator question, Ari [Profile/Gallery] , Tue, 14 Dec 2004 08:30:03 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Using offbrand voltage regulators is a false economy. You can get a genuine Bosch VR from one of the sponsors for about $40-50, including shipping. On my C900, I went through several VRs until the last one, a Bosch, which lasted over 100,000 miles, still working. The usual failure mode was overcharging - unregulated voltage. Considering the very expensive electronics that it is protecting, a voltage regulator is not a good place to save money on a 9000.
A properly installed stock or good aftermarket exhaust system does not need to be welded. They do not fall apart at the connections, indeed most of us find that disconnecting these junctions after a few years is the hardest part of a replacement. By welding, you are eliminating any chance of future DIY work and/or piece part replacement such as the center resonator, which is usually the first part to go. I would also think that welding will evaporate the protective aluminium coating near the welds, but have no experience. If you're installing something other than stock, be sure to disconnect the battery before welding, the electronics are delicate on this car.
