I posted about the same exact symptoms, and one response said it was normal for the Saab 5 spd to do that, where going full right is only used for reverse. While this is counter to every other manual car I've driven, I'm just assuming it's a Saab quirk until I get more curious about it to find out for myself (or when it gets warmer...)
I still find it difficult to believe that's how it was designed, but since I don't have any problems getting it into 5th when I don't try to go full right, I'm just driving it as is for now. Just doesn't seem to be very sensible to shift based on memory of where the gate is instead of having a reference point.
I was considering ordering the coupler simply because it's cheap, but don't think it's the culprit in my case either. The coupler appears to only be the factor in cases where you can't engage the gears away from the center 3-4.
It may very well indicate an internal problem, but it'll have to wait for now. I was thinking there possibly is supposed to be a spring that indicates the right stop for 5th, and going beyond that stop is for reverse, but in my case, there's no springiness evident at the gate for 5th. Doesn't seem to be any confirmation for that, though. Could be everyone just nudges it over to the right just enough, and then forward to 5th. I'm getting used to it- <shrug>
