Does the reverse lockout work?

On my '86 project car, the reverse lockout feature is broken. Thus, if I push all the way to the right I will easily overshoot 5th gear. It actually makes the gear pretty hard to find. On my '87, with aworking lockout, I just push all the way to the right, then up, which is the way it should be. If you are able to engage reverse without pulling up on the collar under the shift knob, then this is probably your problem. I haven't tried to fix it yet, but if you do, please be sure to post.
