Never bought one new, but have had 3 with over 120k on them. One had 180K when I sold it and was still on the original clutch and second DI. There are cars out there that offer better reliability but they are bland and offer mediocrity at best. I'd put a Saab up against any "comparable" european car. My opinion is that since I paid so little to buy this car, who cars if I have to put in a tranny or do a major repair. Even if I have to shell out 2K for something major, I'm still way ahead of the game compared to what I'd have paid for something else. Considering I can't find another car that is as safe, fast, versitile, and economical, I'm quite happy with a 10 year old Aero. These cars are easy to work on and there is a lot of support when it's time to get your knuckles dirty.
Heres an equation to consider:
My saab gets nearly 30mpg. Most cars with same performance get about 20mpg. I drive 50K miles a year which means I use about 834 gallons of fuel less and at 2$gal that adds up to $1668. That's a decent repair budget, plus I don't spend 50K miles a year behind the wheel of a boring car. So to summarize, it's worth it to me. You need to find out if it's worth it to you. Good luck.
