I disagree with your comment based on the two 9k turbo's I've owned. Also, based on years of reading this bb, I'd say the survey results you can find on this site are pretty indicative of what you'll find.
My first 9k was an 88. I drove it for 14 years and about 160,000 miles. My clutch master cyl died on a freeway ramp at about 80k and it wasn't cool. Also, the compressor ate itself around the same time, which was expensive and definitely not cool. But OTW the car was nothing but reliable.
I replaced it with a 97 aero that was badly abused by the previous owner (like no oil changes for 30k). Went through it, replaced all fluids, tires and a lot of belts, and so far so good.
Two things in my favor are a) I'm not an aggressive driver and b) I watch levels carefully and do frequent oil changes. I believe and others will confirm that vigilant preventive maintenance is trhe trick to keeping these cars healthy (which is probably try of countless European cars. If you're not into things like 3k oil changes, my recommendation is to go Japanese.
