Radio code - idiot questions, sorry >

My "new" 1997 car has the Clarion head unit, and I've bought a factory reconditioned Clarion DC625 CD changer to add to it. Have been having great fun reading up on finding the cable and so forth.
However, problem is that I can't find the radio Code in the paperwork that came with the car, and I don't want to do disconnect the radio from battery power till I know the implications. So, some basic questions for your kind replies, please -
How do I find the code if I don't have it?
Can I change the code to one I can remember, without having the present code? (Someone said you can re-set the code by pressing the "Band" button for over five seconds but I don't know if that's good info, and even if it is, maybe I have to enter the current code before I can set a new one)
Can the radio be operated without a code set, and if so, how do I tell whether mine is un-coded now?
Finally, if I'm ignoring something vital, please let me know before I screw up! TIA
