JUST DID THAT... Posted by Daven [Email] (#290) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Daven) on Mon, 6 Jun 2005 07:33:45 In Reply to: Engine replacement, Staffan9000, Sun, 5 Jun 2005 06:10:25 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Yesterday I finally finished the engine transplant on my brother's '92 9KT. It is his first car and he didn't understand what it means when the temp. gauge enters the red and blew a head gasket and warped his head. I wanted to smack him!
His trans. was one year old so when I pulled the engine AND tranny, I took it off and installed it on the engine out of my late '91 9KT (DAMN, and I wanted to sell it). Before I attatched the trans. to the donor engine I removed the pullies and timing chain cover to replace the balance chain and timing chain and timing chain sprockets (the ones on the cam shafts) and crankshaft sprocket (it's teeth were curved like a saw-blade). I've been told this is a good idea b/c it would cost a lot to have it done later and is much easier with the engine out. You need to be EXTREMELY careful to count the links on the chain from pulley to pulley to gear b/c otherwise the timing will be off (and the engine won't run??). It would also be a good idea to change the seals between the head and valve cover. On the trans., its a good idea to replace the release bearing as well. With a full set of metric wrenches & sockets, breaker bars, SAAB hydraulic bleeder kit (TRUST ME), it should be a lengthy but not too difficult and very rewarding task.
Good luck!
