Unless you travel with a lot of tools, installing a serpentine belt on the road isnt' realistic. That's true of the newer cars with the self-adjusting tensioner (like yours). The older manual adjust belt could be done with a few simple tools. Such is life.
Serpentine belts usually don't break on Saabs. In my experience, they come off due to the failure of some other component, like a bad pulley. That's why I replace the tensioner and idler pulleys every 60K miles, and inspect the harmonic balancer (main pulley) whenever I'm in the area.
As to the belt, yes, I carry one. It's a habit from my Fiat days. I don't expect to change the belt myself on the side of the road. But I don't expect the shop I get towed to to have the right belt. At least if I have a belt on hand, any decent shop can do the work. Probably not an issue with Saabs, but with the Fiats, I knew a guy stuck in upstate NY for two days until a belt could be shipped. And if you travel off the beaten path, it could happen with a Saab.
