Catalytic Converter overheating?

1997 9000 Aero 120,000 miles. Recently I had a full turbo back 3" JT exhaust installed at the local Indy shop. A few weeks later the check engine light is now on pretty much all the time. I figured it was the O2 sensor so I made an appointment at the shop. However last night I got home from driving up the steep hill to my house & immediately noticed a burning smell coming from underneath my car. I also experienced a minor backfire on shutdown. I opened the hood & the turbo was glowing red which I have heard is normal. I started the car again & let it idle for a while. After a few minutes I shut down with no backfire. I then took a quick ride in the car & when I returned the similar burning smell was there. The turbo had pleanty of boost but, felt like the car was holding back -like backpressure. Could the bad O2 sensor cause the cat to clog or, overheat. Also I noticed a part on the exterior of the cylinder head drivers side near the front of the head seems to be missing - like it just vibrated off - very weird. Looks like an exterior camshft cover. Can anyone tell me what that may be and if it is related to my problem.
Thanks & Happy Thanksgiving
Robbo
