I have many times brought in my own parts to have them do the installation. Yes, they somewhat frown on it, because they aren't making profit on the parts, but if you explain the situation, they are usually quite accommodating. For me, I would have always gotten the parts, intending to do a job myself, but time or weather or whatever conspired against me, so I'd just decide to have the shop do it.

As for having them only loosen the axle nut, I suspect that is something they would do also, but might charge you a minimum fee like 1/4 hour labor which is about $23. Or they might not, depends if you are a regular customer. I believe they could probably then retighten it to an amount that isn't going to cause any problems, like say 150 lb-ft or something, or to whatever amount would still allow you to get it off when you are home. I actually had a problem where I heard a squealing from my front right wheel, and thought the bearing was going out. It turned out that the axle nut was loose for some reason (not finger tight mind you, just not torqued all the way). They tightened it up and the problem went away, and that axle didn't need any work until the CV joint and bearing went out like 5 years and probably 80,000 miles later. So I don't necessarily believe that a slightly looser than stock torque axle nut is going to cause trouble in the short or long term.
