So most of the posts you see here are going to be about issues. People don't just pop in to say "wow my car is reliable!"
That said, most everything I've heard is that the 9000 is more reliable than a Volvo. I looked at Volvo briefly before I bought my 9000 a few years ago, but stayed away at the recommendation of my indy, who works on both.
My 9000 really has been extremely reliable, I haven't had any major issues the years I've owned it. So, in answer to your question, yes it would be a wise move to get a 9000.
I don't think it would be wise to get a non-turbo, because then the newest you could get would be a '94. The newer you get, the more reliable it'll be. Stick with a '95 or newer CS, and you'll get the light pressure turbo (LPT) which is a bit gentler on the car. You can then play with it to get more power if you want, or keep it at LPT, which is plenty quick enough.
Some issues that all 9k owners face eventually are the heater core, blower motor, motor mounts, and other misc items. The car will definitely depend on how the PO cared for it, so getting records is a must. Regular oil changes are imperative, and transmission fluid changes are a must. If auto, the trannies can be a little sketchy, so make sure it shifts smoothly and has documented fluid changes.
Good luck with the search and kind a nice 9000. You'll be soo glad you did!
