Hub-centric spacers question

Hi all,
Ive got some 16" ROH wheels on my 1990 9000CD and i've read on here that i should be running hub-centric spacers to center the wheels on the hub. However i spoke to a mechanic friend of mine and he said that since the wheels are on tapered bolts they should be centered regardless of whether they have spacers or not, and that he has seen tonnes of cars with tappered bolts that dont have the wheels a perfect fit on the hubs.
So im confused, any help of recomendations will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
