There are lots of bulletins out there on poor quality of Saab auto boxes. I'm a little disappointed as I bought this car and was told by a Saab dealership mechanic that it was a broken engine mount causing the harsh-shifting. Well, a set of mounts later, I go to a different mechanic who greets me and laughs "Let me guess - gearbox trouble?". I got the car checked by the wrong guy.
I was just wondering what causes a gearbox to go wrong with less than 90000 miles on the odo? I've found spring kits for the gearbox that Saab says addresses this issue; was wondering if anyone had any experience of using these and what cost to strip-down / rebuild - I live in Portland, OR, USA.
Lastly, if there are any other known cures (other than gearbox replacement) I'd love to hear them. I've seen folks recommending three / four fluid changes with synthetic ATF - could I just get my mechanic to 'flush' the transmission or remove the pan and filter' to get the same effect or does one always retain 2/3 of the ATF in the 'box after a flush too?
Great forum, by-the-way
