The auto is perhaps better than the manual.....if maintained. I have three '97 9k's..all autos...and, they are fine except for the one that has 180k on it which is whinning.
I did have a similar situation with the Aero..shifting a little harsh and slight whine. I flushed it added lubegard red and later some bardahl trans mechanic. It operates like a new trans. I am running a stage 3 SQR ecu in that car...it has 88k on it. The trans get a bad rap because most do not maintaint them properly. They are really quite durable and some are modifying the engines to over 300hp and still using the stock tranny. there is a guy in Canada running a stage 5 with no issues.
