I believe that by '97 Saab had gone to the 4 wire sensor. Two wires for the heater, one for signal, and one for ground. The sensor no longer relies on the downpipe for a ground return. But it's a very good thought.
It still might be some weird ground loop issue - I'll look in the manual.
I'll also have to look in my Trionic manual this evening to find out the failure logic for the front sensor. If possible, please post the failure code(s) you got.
