you may have very well gotten "bad" gas but doubt it is the 87 octane that is the problem, you will notice more performance from higher octane but generally the 1990 and newer Saabs don't "need" it, unless you run them real hard. I have owned 5 Turbo Saabs mostly 900's ranging from a old 8V 900 a 87 SPG, up to a 2000 900 Se turbo, and now my 94 Aero, I have always run 87 octane except in my 84 900t. But with my 9 years working with Saab some of those years as a Saab service manger, I have seen my share of bad Gas reports on Saabs, most of them came from BP or small no name stations. and I know this is a very touchy subject on Gas and octane, but saabs engine managment system can and will handle the 87, but you will get better fuel economy on 91 and better performance, but typically not enough on the economy side to offset the cost. But if you are hard on the car you will see better performance which may offset the cost for you. In NE ohio BP puts crap in the gas that the Saabs don't like, but Sorry it has been to long to recall the details. but for the record my 94 Aero gets 87 octane and I have put 14k miles on it with no problems. runs like a top. I don't beat the car but I don't baby it either, I do live on nice country roads. but try switching gas stations, run some 91 octane for a tank or 2 and try another station check your milage and compare yourself.
