If it's an Aero or any other Saab that senses the presence of knock you can run 87. I've put 87 in a bunch of my turbo cars. Be aware that the fuel/ignition software was written with premium gas in mind, but if you don't go slamming out full load/boost at 3,000 rpm then it doesn't really matter what grade of fuel you're using; all the octane does is increase the temp/pressure at which the fuel will self-ignite. The compression ratio of a turbo engine is actually lower than other cars, so unless the turbo is thrusting air in and driving up the internal pressure you're scot-free.
I can't see how having less octane would cause your engine to run worse unless you were beating it and it was thus damaged, either by the (somewhat arbitrary) knock sensor malfuctioning and/or other pre-existing mechanical or electrical problems that were keeping the FI system from compensating for knock.
