Brushes or bearings? Posted by Gene N [Email] (#1094) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Gene N) on Wed, 19 Jul 2006 05:03:18 In Reply to: Alternator contact bushings, dboone, Tue, 18 Jul 2006 18:52:39 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The term bushings is a little ambigious. If you mean the carbon brushes, then that is a snap if you replace the voltage regulator (VR), because it has new brushes included. Just unscrew the old VR and put in a new one. If you mean new brushes in an old VR, then I have also done that. It requres that you keep the brushes compressed while you solder the pigtail (a short wire) to the brush housing.
If you mean replace the bearings on the armature, I gave up on that project because you needed a shop press to remove the bearings. There was also a question in my mind as to whether the armature coil had to be removed from shaft to get to the smaller end bearing.
