I got a '95 CS auto for my daughter. It was at a major cash infusion point and I got a good deal on it. Knew the PO, and had maintenance records, which made it even better. Bought it with 138K on it, 18 months ago.
We had the chance to buy her grandmother's Corolla for about the same money as the Saab (after the new parts & labor were factored in), but I wanted something I knew how to fix, had a good knowledge resource (SaabNet), and for which I had a good indy mechanic. I also wanted the safety and winter driving capability, as she is now in collge in Maine. The 9K was the best choice. She'll drive the car into the ground, so I don't care about trade-in value.
Corollas are nice little cars; very reliable and cheap to keep. I know the 9K will cost more to run, but they are more practical with their huge carrying capacity and the active and passive safety is really important. I want my kid in something that can take a hit.
