I bought my '93 Aero in '02, with 128k miles on it, for $3,250 from a seller on this board. I'd bet I've dumped in another $9,000 over time, but I admit I'm THE preventative maintenance guy. (Just ask my bro, Dave Ingram, about that!) That, and I upgraded things like the stereo, wheels, tires, shocks, bushings, exhaust.
What sort of general condition is your car in? How many miles? What major things were already done when you bought it?
Like everyone else here has said, I look at how much it costs me on a monthly average to keep this car. I also allow for some inconvenience-time-factor in there, since when the car's down or needing attention, it can possibly impact not only personal life, but work. All that said, it still is MUCH cheaper to keep the Aero versus a new car.
Also, I struggle like everyone else: If I DID have to replace the car, what's out there worth getting? Perhaps the MazdaSpeed3, the 4-door new GTI, but those are smaller cars. Perhaps a used (gasp!) BMW 330i Performance Package, a previous body style BMW 540i Sport? But they don't have hatches and are very expensive to maintain -- and hard to work on yourself.
So, keep that Aero of yours!
