I learned to perform clutch-less shifting on an '84 Nissan Sentra, than I used the technique with regularity on an '88 Sentra and my '90 Honda Civic without any ill affects(the current owner of my old Honda is still driving it with the same tranny, though he does not drive clutch-less). I tried, for several times, the same technique with a '91 9000 Turbo I once owned, but I could not perform a single smooth shift to my satisfaction; Matching revs with SAAB's roll-the-dice syncros and the notchy shifter was, for me, difficult at best. So I abadoned the notion of perfecting clutch-less shifting on SAABs forever for fear of turning manuel trannies into blenders. Bottom line, hefty low-end torque from the long-stroke 2.3 Turbo can seriously damage your tranny if you do not perform perfect shifts EVERY TIME and transmission replacement is more costly than clutch replacement, especially if you are not a DIYer. I now consider a clutch to be a normal wear-and-tear item like brakes and tires, a part of routine maintenance and thus not worth saving.
