David-
I know you are suspicious of oiled aftermarket filters, and so am I. So I found a solution. The AEM DryFlow air filter, fitted to a GenuineSaab intake pipe (for the 9000), sealed with my thermoplastic roof mod. The AEM DryFlow filter is not like K&N at all, it feels soft and like a regular filter, but can be washed over and over again. Has a very high filtration rate, filtering particles smaller than 1 micron. The filter costs around $40-50, but will last a lifetime. AEM specifically states NOT TO OIL THIS FILTER. It is a 100% oil-free filter.
With the Taliaferro intake tubing, this filter works great.
With my sealer mod, this setup is pretty idiot-proof.
Check out pictures of the setup here:

And check out AEM's DryFlow website:
http://www.aempower.com/oil_free.aspx
The AEM part number for the correct filter to fit the GenuineSaab intake would be AEM21-203DK, it is a 3" inlet with a 5" element length.
So there you have it. The best of both worlds. A paper-like, high flow, high filtrating, universal fit, reusable filter with an enclosed, protected/isolated, "open air setup." See, it can be done :)
