Same year car too - 1994. On mine, there was a white area about the size of a dime that had hardened, looked like a drop of something (battery acid? but I don't think that affects rubber) had landed and stayed there. This area had a crack which showed only when flexed a certain way, letting out the grease.
I would understand the failure better if the exhaust was nearby, as on the passenger side of C900s, but there was no good reason I could think of for this to occur. Perhaps SAAB got a bad batch of them in 1993-4.
