Don't overlook the 1995+ CS cars Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Fri, 15 Aug 2008 14:09:03 In Reply to: Thanks guys., buckmath, Fri, 15 Aug 2008 12:15:15 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The 1993 - 1994 CS and CSE cars came with either no turbo (Normally Aspirated) or with a full 200 HP turbo. Starting in 1995, SAAB changed the approach so CS cars (the "base model") came with the 170 HP Low Pressure Turbo and CSE cars came with more features and the 200 HP Full Pressure Turbo standard (the V6 was optional and shunned on this forum).
If you find a nice 1995+ CS, it is fairly easy to change it to 200 HP by adding a boost control valve, the appropriate vacuum tubing, and the CSE ECU which can be found at "auto recyclers" - many here have done this upgrade. There is some speculation that CS cars were less abused as it was harder to do so given the lower power available.
On my 1994 CS Turbo, I swapped in an Aero ECU, which adds the low and midrange power of the Aero by allowing greater boost, but may miss some power on the high end due to the smaller turbo vs. the Aero. In my normal city/suburban driving, I can't say that this is much of a loss. CS cars also came with cloth seats standard, but many were optioned with leather. Given the range of temperatures in the midwest, I somewhat prefer the cloth seats which are much cooler in summer and warm up faster in the winter.
