1/8" isn't much, but it's more than it sounds and I think 1/16" would be more than enough. Also, I can't visualize the exact layout and only did this on a C900, but it is possible to push a seal too far in, so its sealing lip drops off the back end of the pulley surface, or till the seal pushes right on through the cover.
