Hi,
If the key has been removed but the head units stay on, my suspicion is that the head unit (Cassette player) is faulty. Amp appears to be off based on your description.
If you pull the Cassette player, you'll see an 8-pin connector that has 5 wires connected. On this, there are 2 positive lines going into the head unit. The thicker red one (15A) is non-switched, and the thinner red one is switched (to fuse box, I think 10A).
If these are somehow crossed (don't know how), this could explain the behavior you're seeing. I'm less familiar with how the faceplate could come into play here, but hey, it's a Saab, and weirder things have been observed.
