Strange sound while braking

Hey there - I have a '92 9000 which has been sometimes making a weird sound when I hit the brakes. It only happens if I've picked up a little speed (say 30 mph) and sounds like a dull scraping. That's not the best description, but put it this way: for a few days, I thought some boxes I had in the trunk were sliding around when I hit the brakes. When I checked the trunk, I realized that wasn't the case since I had taken the boxes out. So, it doesn't really exactly sound like metal is scraping (but it could be?)
Sorry it's so convoluted (now I know what people who call Car Talk are going through when they call) but maybe that's enough to ring a bell for one of you.
One more thing: around the same time this started happening, the pictogram would light up whenever I touched the brake pedal. The pictogram for the front lights would light up--along with the light for the entire vehicle. Maybe this is related?
Any help would be deeply appreciated. Thanks.
