The facts:

Car ran fine, drove fine, parked at home in driveway.

Car sat for several days, at least 48 hours in the EXTREME Upstate NY cold.

Went to start car at night, still cold, like -4*F

Cranked over quickly, but no running. Minor sputter everyonce and a while, hardly enough to sound like it's trying.

I have a liquid filled fuel pressure gauge on my fuel rail, and it read 40psi roughly when the key was turned to ON. so... i figured the pump was running at least, i had fuel at the rail... i was frustrated, so

Called friend for a hand, he brought starter fluid.

Sprayed into throttle body, after a struggle to pull off intake pipe.

No start still.

Noticed he had *probably* yanked out hall effect sensor wire on the distributor while pulling off my intake pipe.

Plug it back in, no start. Same Symptoms.

Check volts, kinda low, 10.5v, however starter is still cranking strong.

Attach jumper cables, still no start.

Check all fuses, Ignition system fuse in engine compartment, fuel pump fuse, EDU fuse, apc fuse... etc.. all fine.

No Check engine light.

All hoses and electrical connections seem secure.

Notice that, when trying to crank over the engine... the dash lights all go OUT, COMPLETELY OUT... when the key is turned to the START position.

As if you are turning off the ILLUMINATION behind the guages. EDU and clock dim to almost nothing, even with jumpers still attached to the car.

Read about this online, come to see it's POSSIBLY the ignition cylinder electrical contacts going bad, as IF the EDU/ignition system fuse is not receiving power...

I go outside, and run a test... by PULLING the EDU fuse, and trying to start the car... i don't know why, it seemed to me like it wouldn't help at all...

...however...

THE CAR STARTED, AND RAN, BRIEFLY

I turned it off, put the fuse back IN... and tried to start it again...

it ran a second time, but died out, and made a pretty scarey ker-plunk sound... i can't even describe it to you, but i didn't like it one bit.

I should probably win the darwin-ism award for natural stupidity... but...

I don't know...

I thought these were non interference engines... but... did i cause the ignition system to try and fire up the engine but it was in the wrong position somehow? which made the noise?

I'm going to wait until it's warmer to try and start it again...

It still tries to crank over as normal, the starter can still turn it, but... nothing catching still.

I guess i should... test for spark? The tailpipe reeks of starter fluid and fuel...
