CV Joint Install Woe

I've installed a few CV joints in the past. The CV joint install on my new to me 97 9000 Aero is unlike anything I've seen so far. The joint doesn't slide onto the shaft without a bunch of hammering with a deadblow mallet. Then it stops short of the fully engaged position by ~.25 inch. I haven't gone completely animal on it yet for fear of dimpling the races. Seems like the splines are not right on either the shaft or the joint (or both). The joint came off the shaft extremely hard as well.
Has anyone seen this? Is it just a matter of slamming this home or is it time for a new half shaft?
By the way, the reason it is out of the car is to chase down a rumble on acceleration. I wanted to check the inner driver. That turned out to be pretty good. I couldn't see any wear to speak of. The CV joint does have a little "scratchiness" to it as if there was a little metal to metal sliding contact at the races. Otherwise it seems clean and tight.
