I don't really have any suggestion to get the joint back on. I would guess, but don't know for sure, that not many people take the CV joint off the shaft. If it is bad, or even if the boot is bad and needs replaced, many people here just replace the whole half-shaft for about $90. The "scratchiness" sounds like maybe dirt or sand in the joint and if there is, it needs to be replaced. If the boot was bad, and allowed dirt to get into it, it is almost impossible to get it clean.
