It was quite a battle to get them out together but as you know if the lower bolt head is stripped you don't have much choice. IIRC I pulled the strut, swung down the the lower arm, removed all the bolts I could from the alternator and bearing bracket, and then dealt with everything that was in the way. I may have disconnected the mounts and jacked the engine to get more room, but I'm not sure.
I don't know what symptoms are prompting you to pull everything out, but VRs are pretty cheap and easy to R&R in situ for the early alternators and I don't believe the carrier bearings are a trouble area. In my case a PO had done an auto to manual swap and had neglected to change the bracket.
I've done a bit of rust repair over the years with mixed results, but don't have much experience in collision damage. My 88T took this winter's road salt pretty hard, and it's not looking too good.
