As Adam notes, the VR is on the alternator, with integral brushes. Brushes wear down, and are the major reason for alternator issues. There is a diode block in the alternator, and a blown diode will cause charging issues. In 30 years, I've replaced at lot of VRs, but only had one blown diode.
More information-
What is, and isn't working? I assume you have a low voltage display on the EDU (less than 12.6 while driving around), and the BATTERY light ON.
Turn the key to ON, but don't start the car. Do you get the BATTERY light? If not, start there. The battery light is part of the charging system. There is a thin yellow or green wire that goes from the battery light to the alternator. If that falls off, the alternator won't work - and the wire can chafe and break. If the bulb burns out, the alternator won't work. This doesn't happen very often, because the bulb never gets any use.
What are the symptoms?
