To check base boost, you need a calibrated pressure gauge. Plumb it into a hose in the intake manifold. Get moving, and in 3rd gear and below 1500 rpm, open the throttle wide. When the revs hit 2500, apply the brakes while keeping hte accelerator fully depressed, so the maximum engine load is obtained while at 2500 rpm. Read the gauge.
Correct base boost is 0.4 +/- 0.03 bar. Rarely, if ever, should the base boost be adjusted.
As to running regular, just go ahead and do it. If there is engine knock, the Trionic will cut back the boost. No reason to make any changes to the engine - it does a fine job adapting to the fuel all by itself. And every engine is different, and they all age. Some engines need high octane fuel to get full boost as they age, due to carbon buildup increasing the compression. Other engines can get away with lower octane fuel as they age, due to drops in compression ratio, etc.
If it matters any, my '97 makes full boost on 87 octane except on the hottest days.
