Well, the point of this adjustment is to set where it is supposed to go, so telling you where it goes is counterproductive. If there are marks on the rod showing where it was, that is the best indicator of a place to start. If your car is supposed to be set in Reverse (I'm not sure for the pre-1994s, the 1994+ cars are set in 4th), then the selector rod probably needs to be "IN" on the transmission end (the orientation gets reversed through the ball at the bottom of the shifter lever on the console).
My car is a 1994, so the procedure is slightly different, but I just set the shifter rod adjustment a week ago after having the transmission replaced (it was close, but I couln't consistently get into 5th, now works perfectly).
The plastic plug and adjuster hole on the transmission side on my car was just behind the part number plate on top of the transmission - not sure where it is on pre-1994s. The hole for the shift lever was a bit hidden: I had to partially remove the approximately 5" x 7" black plastic trim plate surrounding the shift lever, which is held in by two Torx screws. Immediately in front (towards the radio) of the plastic ball at the base of the shift lever, there is a hole in the cast metal housing that the 4mm pin will fit into - it's quite obvious once exposed.
I used large framing nails that were about 4mm diameter for pins. I put the pins in place, loosened the selector rod clamp, pushed the pins down all the way (obvious by feel), tightened the clamp, removed the pins - done.
