Don't bother with a 2x4; it'll absorb too much impact and you'll get nowhere. Especially with a mallet. Try screwing on the axle nut a little for more surface area, then pounding it with a dead blow hammer. If that doesn't work, get a sledge hammer and be gentle; you're probably working against a lot of rust on the axle splines. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but you should probably avoid hammering against the nut unless it's flush with the tip of the axle, lest you hit too hard and damage threads.
Also, be aware of the position of the tripod joint (at the transmission). If you're hammering against the axle and the inner joint is completely recessed in the bearing carriage, you'll have no movement and will probably damage something. Pull on the axle until the inner boot boot is extended and hit the axle nut a few times.
Finally, when putting the assembly together, use spline grease to help installation and possibly prevent this nonsense in the future.
