I recently had to change the out CV boots on both sides. I used the old axle nut and smartly hit the axle nut/CV joint until it came out. I held in one had the upper part of the steering knuckle where the struts bolts and cautiously yet smartly hit the axle. I used a deadblow hammer, a neoprene hammer, steel drifts, woods drifts, etc. The only way I could get the CV joints out of the axles was with my 4lb hammer. Every few blows I would back of the axle nut to look at the threads and keep them sharp. It did take some patience but it eventually came out. There is a puller on eeuroparts that looks like it'll work with a lot less effort and potential damage but I haven't tried it. Reassembly was a bit tricky; make sure that the splines on the shaft are properly engaged in the hub. I pushed the axle through the hub as far as it would go (which wasn't very far) and then used a fresh nut with grease on the face that contacts the hub and a big socket and gently, steadily advanced the nut on the axle thereby pulling it through the hub. I did that until it bottomed out and then I knew I had it in correctly and straight. If you get it all lined up prpoerly it is practically impossible to pull/push the axle crookedly through the hub using a steady turn of the socket. As with the disassembly, I would periodically back off the nut to make sure I wasn't stripping the nut or the axle. I then used my torque wrench to 210 ft-lbs on the nut followed by three quick bursts of my pnuematic impact wrench--it ain't coming off! My indie indicated that the axel nut is not one he is concerned about the torque on. He uses the impact wrench until the nut no longer turns. I have done this recently on both sides to replace the outer boots (replaced the inner boots as a matter of course because they were there). This method worked well and so far everything rolls nicely and my boots are clean and dry. Again, if you use the big hammer you don't need a mighty swing; you're not John Henry. Let the mass of the hammer do the work. good luck!
