After 41 years of European cars (MG, VW, Volvo, Saab) I'd feel like a traitor if I bought an Asian car.
I always buy used anyway, which broadens the selection of potentially affordable rides. I'd probably go with a 3-series Bimmer. Prices are not too unreasonable for cars with say, 50-80K on them and many are well maintained, especially if they are one-owner cars. I've checked parts prices and they are mostly on a par with Saab. The 3-series is the bread and butter car for BMW and they seem to be pretty solid and reasonable to live with.
I'd stay away from Audi/VW since they seem to be expensive to own once the warranty goes away.
If I were to go Japanese, I'd most likely look at something like a Mitsubishi EVO or maybe a Suby Impreza WRX. (If it's going to be Japanese, it should at least go fast.)
