As noted by others - if you have the factory rack (or a thule using the same holes?) the limit is much more than your 85lb canoe.
I put an 18' cedar stripper on mine - no problems at all.
I have 2 loops of webbing that are bolted to the fenders using the exsiting bolts (with fender washers) - when I'm not using them, they just flop into the engine bay. That gives me a nice V set of ties downs in the front, which keeps the bow from moving, even when passing a semi. I also don't have to have the tie downs contact the hood (and I haven't noticed any rubbing from the webbing at the side of the hood.
Always use a rope from the stern to the rear tow point too - should something fail, you're better off dragging the canoe than having it go flying off like a leaf (seen that - luckily no injuries or collisions).
